A sponsor gives you some money in exchange for publicity. Their name may appear in the programme (thanks to . . . for their support), in the title of the event (The Red Grape ......... Open), in the venue (Banner, Signs etc) or just a straight forward logo on the players shirt/vest either way they would like a return for there investment.
Local businesses may give small amounts in return for a free mention if they think they'll benefit (pubs and restaurants are obvious examples) or you could just sell advertising space in the programme. Larger businesses may have some cash for community events, but the amounts are likely to be small.
