Since winning the 2011 China Open as a qualifier and reaching the following World Championship final, 23-year-old Judd Trump has been at the forefront of snooker's top players, constantly challenging for titles.

However since winning last year's UK Championship he has failed to subsequently win any other majors. He came close in September, narrowly losing to John Higgins in the final of the Shanghai Masters but he managed to put that to bed and performed superbly in the evening session to come from 8-6 down to win the inaugural International Championship 10-8 in Chengdu, China.

Trump was the bookies favourite from the start of the event and after an exciting 6-5 victory over Mark Allen in the quarter-finals it looked as if he had one hand on the trophy already. In the final however he nearly came unstuck against former World Champion Robertson after trailing 5-3 at the end of the first session and 8-6 later on in the evening.

From then though it was all one way traffic from Trump after winning the scrappy 15th frame then taking the next two with breaks of 96 and 119 to lead 9-8, some superb potting in the 18th kept him going and he managed to make two small contributions to see him through and lift the trophy and take home the £125,000 top prize.

Even with his second defeat in a major final in 2012, Robertson still always a strong favourite to win every tournament he enters and now that he has finally gotten past the quarter-finals of an Asian event, no doubt we will see him win more titles on the continent and be right up there to take the UK Championship crown next month.

Trump will be over the moon with how he played this week and now that he is the new world no.1 (only the 10th in professional snooker history) he needs to make sure he keeps this momentum going and he could see himself defend his title in York next month and even possibly lift the World Championship trophy in 2013.
